I've had some experience, but never gotten as far as writing an actual,
tested, driver.
Look at National's internet site (www.national.com) and go to their engineer
design resorce. Next, search for DP8390 data. This is the 'chipset' that
every ne-2000 is based around. There's 3 or 4 .PDF's on the chipset and,
thus, the cards. Some assembler code examples are also in one of the .PDF's.
There's also data on the AT/Lantic chipset, which is basicly NE-2000, but
with software-config. There's some more good data in those .PDF's too.
I got as far as writing a simple 'is card installed?' driver that works out
the I/O address and IRQ, but that was as far as I went.
