GK>My Amazon is a Yellow-Front. He's going on 9 years old. What are the
GK>chances of teaching him some new vocabulary words (like the *second half*
of
GK>Row Row Row Your Boat! He has only known the first half since he was 1!).
Hi! Welcome to Parrots! I'm the sometimes-missing moderator!
If the bird is interested, there should be no problem teaching him
more things. But if the bird doesn't feel like it, there is no way you
can MAKE him learn it! What *I* would do is sing the whole song
in front of him regularly. If he learns that there is MORE, he may begin
to tack on the second half. Of course, he may sing it 2nd part first,
too, because that part is newer and more interesting...
Beyond that, my conures tend to learn to say things they can relate to
actions or objects; such as "Is it good?" when I put food in dishes, or
"Bye-bye" when I get out my car keys. They have yet to learn anything
really abstract. I spent 6 months trying to teach one to say "Rock and
Roll!"...no luck! But she picked up "Hey baby!" in 7 days because the
birdsitters (my nieces) said it EVERY TIME they picked her up from her
cage. To her, "Hey baby!" means "come get me"!
Try being very consistent in your use of phrases and words when you are
around your Amazon, and see if he picks anything up.
