Around here they are well-organized. When there's a 6:30 meeting, you can
bet that they've packed the house by 2:00 that afternoon, and they boo and
hiss anyone who speaks in favor of the budget. Their basic idea is that they
quit school to work in the mill when they turned 16, and don't understand why
kids today need all that "fancy college stuff." This IS a blue collar town,
after all: you can tell by all of the empty factories. It's pretty scary.
The most amazing thing is to hear them talk about how "it's time to fire all
the teachers and hire non-union ones." These are exactly the same machinists
and such who, 50 years ago, would have broken your head with a pipe if they
thought you were a scab.
