I don't have a TS-50. Nor have I ever used one. It *may* be that the PLL
won't lock until it warms up. I had a 2 meter radio in the car that did
that when it got cold. Turned out to be a cold solder joint that showed
up after this particular model radio (an Azden 4000) was several years
old. Found out it was a common problem with all the same model number
that surfaced several years after manufacture. The cold solder joints
were connections from an IF can coil that had heavy wires in the coil.
As a result these particular joints were never was heated enough by the
wave soldering technique that Azden employed. The problem *also* was
evidenced in the inability of the thing to *receive* anything until it
warmed up. If your radio *does* receive on turn on, probably not the
same problem but perhaps a similar one. You might put it on a bench and
use a can of freon to chill all the joints until you find the faulty
one.
