I used to call Tim Pozar and Tom Jennings' Fido BBSes in San Francisco, both
pre net/node systems. I had an old Toshiba T1100 that had been cast aside at
work; we were all dumb terminals and Macs, no idea what a DOS laptop was doing
there. Once I found the dial-in phone line and split it to my laptop, I was in
business.
