I would go into network connections and remove the network connections then
remove the NIC in device manager, reboot and reconfigure them to see if the
grey goes away then. If yes then start working to get things going again
each step checking to see if the grey returns until you find what causes
it.
Is it possible tcp/ip (maybe dhcp or something) had failed and you were
running just netbeui?
