Replying to a message from Steven Horn 1:17/67 to JIM WELLER, About YK restaurants, On Sat Sep 18 2004 SH> Let's see if any of the other stalwarts here have any comments. The SH> one problem I have with the 'missing gene' explanation for SH> aboriginal alcoholism is that I know a fair number of First Nation SH> members who appear to have no difficulty with consuming alcohol. Being a resident of "south north" you and Jim will understand that comment. I have seen in the 43 years of being here many natives that can handle booze a hell of a lot better than I could ever dream of doing, so the missing gene theory does not wash with me. I think it is more to do with the individuals make up, every one has either a genetic predisposition, this comes from both parents and ALL ethnic backgrounds. What the missing gene theory implies is that the first nations people are inferior, look back in history a bit people said that the Irish were missing something because they could not hold their booze, unfair evaluation. People are people, no matter what. Hope this helps. Keep us posted. We are a fine board trying to make it better. http://www.pris.bc.ca/ghannah ghannah{at}pris.bc.ca Cheers!
