Angle, Lesnar best bet at Summerslam

By DON 'Cyrus' CALLIS -- For SLAM! Wrestling

Many wrestling fans are buzzing about the Summerslam match between
Triple H and Goldberg. But it may be another feud on the other side of
the roster, between Kurt Angle and Brock Lesnar, that holds the most
promise for WWE over the course of the next few months.

While there are lingering questions about the Goldberg-Triple H match
involving Trip's groin injury, Goldberg's own situation with respect
to his limited arena show dates and the overall question of agendas
and what type of match it should be, the Lesnar-Angle situation looks
much more clear. Kurt Angle is, to put it as plainly as possible, the
best damn wrestler on the planet today. His uncanny ability to get the
best out of opponents has drawn favorable comparisons to a young Ric
Flair. He seems only interested in doing what is best for overall
business, which means for him and his opponent. To top it all off, he
is the best pure athlete on the roster.

Brock Lesnar, on the other hand, is a legitimate monster, an athletic
freak of nature. Anyone who has seen him snatch the 500 pound Big Show
off his feet with ease to set up an F-5 knows that the strength he
possesses is that of an Olympic weightlifter, rather than a
bodybuilder. The other scary thing about Lesnar is that for a man over
6-foot-4 and 280 pounds, he possesses an unreal ability to carry
opponents to great matches. Much like Angle, but to a lesser extent.
Require proof? Two words: Big Show. While WWE has been trying to get
Show over to where they wanted him for years now, it was not until he
began working consistently with Lesnar and Angle that he began to
really be money for the company.

Last year about this time, I wrote on these pages that with last
year's Summerslam matchup between Lesnar and Angle around the corner,
WWE had what could be the next big thing for their company: a feud
between two men so athletic, so impressive and just so damn good at
what they did, that people would be mesmerized by what they were
seeing. Their match at last year's Summerslam -- which was as
believable as anything you will see in wrestling -- was just a taste
of what they are capable of. WWE needs to capitalize on this magic at
this year's event. If both men can remain healthy (and both have had
their share of injuries this year which they have chosen to ignore),
then WWE could bring back fans to the product who long to see the type
of match that Lesnar and Angle are ideally suited to providing.

K-5 NEWS

It was a real pleasure to get to do colour commentary with Mike Tenay
on a recent NWA-TNA pay-per-view event in Nashville, Tenn. Mike is one
of the more knowledgeable people in the industry and is a real
straight shooter. That makes it easy to be out there. I also enjoyed
engaging in banter with regular colour man Don West....Many thanks to
D. Lo Brown who appeared last week on the NHB Radio show with Joe
Aiello...There is lots of cool TNA merchandise available on the
company Web site at www.nwatna.com....Bob Sapp, the man-monster and
former NFL star continues to be the hottest thing in Japan where he is
a mixed martial arts fighter for K-1. Lots of talk about how big a
deal a Sapp-Lesnar match would be in Japan...NHB superstar Ivan
Sozynski is currently training for his first mixed martial arts fight.
Ivan spent two weeks training in shoot wrestling with Bad News Allen
and has since been tearing up the local Jui Jitsu ranks. Ivan
continues with his wrestling training as well.
