CS> Way back when, it was just different enough from 'english
CS> cheddar' to get it's own name but as the name is very
CS> 'generic' it's been pre-empted now to mean a grunch of
CS> other cheesiod items 'made in the USA'. Believe me, even
CS> USA folks get confused on this one.
Ever notice, American Cheese is pasturize process cheese, but
American Cheese Singles, (Individually wrapped slices for those
of you not familiar with it) is pasturized Process cheese food.
I never buy the singles. I don't know what the difference is
between cheese and cheese food, but I'll stick with the cheese.
Though it's almost always some form of cheddar. Sometimes
something else, almost never American.
