I recall them from Florida but as a special thing people had gotten from
¨elsewhere. One lady had a tree of them not far from my house.
The ones Bjorn and I mention, are Asian ones and quite common here. I'd
guess ¨from looks and taste, related closely to the mandarin orange
(Meekan) which is ¨happy with a more northerly climate than Florida but I
think more subject to ¨damage from lack of rainfall?
Last year, it was very dry for Japan Kyushu standards and the meekan crop
wasnt ¨good. When most years at peek they cost as little as 20 to 100yen
(cal that a ¨dollar for the rest of you), last year i dont think I found
them at even 10 per ¨100yen. They were also smaller than normal and a
little less juicy. This year ¨though is looking to be a good crop and the
early ones are already out, shipped ¨up north here from Okinawa I think
(early ones, Okinawa is hotter and earlier ¨crops than Kyushu). When the
local trees are at full, the local market will ¨flood with them for a month
to 6 weeks.
