The same thing often happens to someone behind the wheel of a car...or a
teen (mostly) "protected" by being within a group.  Looks to me like a 
kind of mass inferiority complex, that people can't simply be who they 
are.

I agree with you there, as do many...it's just that so far nobody has 
come up with a really good idea on how to solve this problem.
