Dear Friend and Wolf Supporter,
My name is Rae Henderson Ott, and as the Director of the North
American Wolf Association I get many calls each week to rescue wolves and
wolf-hybrids. On January 11th, I encountered the worst situation possible.
A friend, Carole Sanders, Director of Animal Angels Rescue & Rehab and I were
called for assistance by two women who are "boarding" 18 abandoned wolves and
wolf-hybrids at their "exotic zoo" just north of Houston, where they also
board lions, tigers, cougars, primates and other animals. Carole and I (and
others) have been to this hell-hole several times, and have been trying in
vain to close it down for some time now.
Carole rushed in a truckload of food. Not fed since their owner had
abandoned them--more than two weeks earlier--some are in need of medical
attention.
We learned that only six of the wolves are socialized to the point of
human handling. Carole's place is full up as are all my rescue people. They
~cannot~ go back out into the public and if we don't get them out, they'll
have to be destroyed. My heart aches for them. Imprisoned in cages 5'
square.... the fire in their eyes has died and their spirits have gone. The
expression worn on these faces is one of animals who were once proud and
commanding, and have now been reduced to begging - and the humiliation is
evident in their eyes.. as Marc and I stood in the center of this animal
Auschwietz, a wolf not three feet away looked straight into my eyes and
began the most mournful song I've ever heard... within seconds, the rest
joined her. It was errie... as if some invisible hand had reached down
inside my chest with a grappling hook and began twisting it...
.... this is the greatest lesson in forgiveness I have ever had had the
opportunity to practice. I was sick. I am a grown woman and I went to the
car in tears.
Carole and I began immediately to try to raise the money to ransom
the wolves. The women who run the place, ~who asked for our help~, want ~us~
to pay ~them~! The woman who abandoned them--leaving a $4,000 unpaid
boarding bill--is nowhere in sight. That, plus the cost of medical care.....
So far we have managed to raise only $1,000.
It gets worse. Three of the females are pregnant and one has a
lacerated, swollen (possibly broken) ankle joint, which she can't walk on.
I'm scouring Houston for a vet willing to go back in with me.
To allow three additional litters to be born under these conditions
would be inhumane and irresponsible, so if we cannot find a sanctuary or
sanctuaries to take them, these young mothers-to-be and their unborn babies
will have to be destroyed. It's an awful call.... one I am reluctant to
make in haste.
Will you help us help them?
I know that with your help we can reach our goal of $4,000 for this rescue.
Your gift of $10 $25, $50, $100 or a gift of any amount will help
us get them into a safe place and badly needed medical attention. Although
they cannot be rehabilitated for life in the wild, we are hoping that we can
at least compensate for their horrible mistreatment by placing them in some
safe haven where they can live out the rest of their lives in a responsible,
caring environment.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter... it is
comforting to know that we are not alone in our efforts to care for abused
animals in desperate need.
For the wolves,
Rae Henderson Ott
