Or people with disabilities are thought of as "second class citizens".
Sadly, a recent news story, on what would happen if another hurricane
like Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, noted that "in most cases, the disabled
and elderly would be left behind". Some would say that's "survival of
the fittest", but IMO, it'd be better just in nature.

Speaking of disabilities, there was a local TV commercial awhile back,
warning people NOT to park in "handicapped spaces", unless they had a
hang-tag or license plate...otherwise they risked a ticket and a fine.

The commercial showed this guy parking in a disabled spot, so he could
run into a restaurant to answer natures call. Just after he went inside,
a vehicle WITH a driver in a wheelchair, had a devils own time getting
parked, and out of his vehicle. Thankfully for him, a police officer
came on the scene (timing is everything!), and ticketed the guy who had
parked there illegally. Just then, the illegally parked vehicle owner
emerged from the restaurant, protesting the ticket. The officer
pointed to the handicapped man, and basically said "tell it to the
judge". :)

I was in a wheelchair myself for 3 months in 1971, after having
surgery to build arches in my feet...as I was born without any.
Nowadays, when I see things like the incident in the commercial, you
just about want to "break the legs" of these idiots to "make them
deserving of the disability spot!!

As per previous messages, I forsee before the end of the year,
spending part or much of my day in a wheelchair, due to my legs and
other issues. But, having spent that time in a chair 35 years ago, I'm
ready to accept that, if it arises.

My wife was born disabled (aortic insufficiency, among other things),
so she has a "hang-tag". If I'm out by myself (which is rare nowadays),
I don't use the tag, since I'm not "officially disabled" as of yet...but
as per a previous post, hope to be soon. But, there was an article in
the paper recently of folks who had a family member who was disabled,
and they had a "disabled hang-tag" for their vehicles...but yet, that
disabled person was not with them at the time, and these people were not
disabled at all. They were using it as an excuse to get a "close parking
place".
