Well I'm just reporting what is often said, in case you had not seen the
advice. Obviously if you changed permissions on operating systems files,
and then had a problem, and phoned Microsoft for support, they would want
you to put all the permissions back to standard (after maybe trying a
couple of quick things first).

I believe a secure system would allow remote desktop to a domain controller
only for trusted operators. A backup operator could backup all your files
regardless of their permissions, then take the media home and read all
files.

I haven't seen any specific advice about this, but it's pretty obvious that
stuff could break with permission changes. The most spectacular example was
when some file was "secured" on Windws NT 4 (or was it 3.51?).
The system would then shutdown when certain users logged on.
