I use both Index Server and Windows Desktop Search. WDS is excellent =
for indexing email. I love it. I couldn't go back. For files, it may =
be OK for small numbers but I have 2.4 million files indexed. I also =
access the index remotely which Index Server provides.

There is a review of indexing apps at:
  http://arstechnica.com/reviews/apps/desktop-search.ars

They preferred the MSN Desktop Search.
