I liked the dead end:  "Tried Microsoft support number: automated lady
says if you have OEM computer press 1, then says call your OEM which is not
possible here since the OEM is defunct. Called Microsoft WPA number, they
don't want to talk to you unless you have the screen for entering the
50-digit code in front of you which doesn't come up in this computer's
situation."

   What happens in this situation?  Does the customer dangle twisting in
the wind?  Does the customer have to purchase another full license?
