From: John Beckett "Gary Britt" wrote in message news:: > Well this was on a bit older hardware (but still should have been plenty > fast enough to avoid this) and it was in a Domain situation There are some registry entries that can influence how the Indexing Service operates. I haven't studied the details, but ISTR one of them offered to speed up indexing (that is, slow down the current user in order to speed up indexing). Maybe a domain admin had set something that influenced what you saw? Or, maybe it would have been ok if you had left it running for a day? Certainly with the defaults, what Rich said is correct. You can see the status of the Indexing Service (run ciadv.msc). It says (after you expand the Status column) "Indexing Paused (User Active)". And it really is paused so long as you are active. I'm also a fast typist and I can't tolerate background rubbish. I have never noticed the Indexing Service running (although I think when I first enabled it, I felt its activity during the first day). There is a review of indexing apps at: http://arstechnica.com/reviews/apps/desktop-search.ars They preferred the MSN Desktop Search.
