Hi Rich, as you were just saying about Re: STREET PEOPLE....
RW> RB> GV> cop isn't going to shoot them if it becomes necessary? Apparently
RW> RB> GV> some do....which just amazes the heck out of me!!
RW> RB>
RW> RB> Yeah, they should realize that with the standard training a cop
RW> RB> gets, they aren't really that mentally equipped to handle a firearm
RW> RB> in a high-stress situation.
RW>
RW> RT> Do you think that you are? If yes, why and if no, how can
RW> RT> you judge?
RW>
RW> From the contact I've had with police officers I have
RW> to agree some what.
So do I, somewhat and on some officers. I don't agree with it as a
blanket statement.
RW> A lot of officers spend more time being taught how to
RW> not sexually harass someone then on how to use their
RW> weapon. I seem to remember that a LEO told me that he
RW> had spent more time training with his baton then he had
RW> with his sidearm back when he was a cadet.
True. There are many, many more times when a baton is the right
answer versus a gun.
BTW, one of the problems with the modern police officer is that too
many of them did not have any exposure to firearms as they grew up.
Most of the older officers did or got it when they were in the military.
RW> Stress firing is a lot harder then qualification
RW> firing. Ask anyone who has ever had to fire at another
RW> person. And when there is incoming fire it gets even
RW> harder.
Exactly right.
RW> There are several good books and video tapes on the
RW> subject out there. Of course there are a lot of BAD
RW> books and tapes out there. Anyway it takes a lot of
RW> training to operate under this type of stress.
RW>
RW> If you check into shootings (or accidents) one of the
RW> things you will find is a lot of "I don't remember. .
RW> ." or "I just did . . ." That's because you don't
RW> have time to think you only have time to react. If you
RW> don't have the training you don't react correctly.
My point was that police officers, *in general*, are better equipped
mentally for shooting situations than civilians, *in general*, are.
There are *some* civilians who are as good as (or, maybe, better than)
the best police officers.
