I don't run it under vmware, I run it under VPC, but the problem is Vista,
not the emulation layer.  You need to partition the virtual hard drive
before you start the install.  You either partition it with some other OS,
or partition it with the Vista install, then when you get past that point,
reboot and start the install again and it should work fine.
