It is no diphtong.
And it is no nasal sound (as you suggested in the email). The only  
difference is in the tension and the form of the lips, which are *very*  
slightly more open when forming the "u" (as in "to put). You
don't need no  
nose to speak it. So even with a cold one can speak the "".. what a  
relief. :-)

But anyway, I think it is more difficult to describe it than to speak it.
