It's funny but it's those morons like McCarver who have allowed this to
become the norm. They say "I don't mind it as long as they call it both ways"
and because it's a former player, nay, former catcher, it's ok and the
umpires see it as a way of justifying their strike zones. I agree with your
assessment and it has nothing to do with the Braves or anything that's
happened in these playoffs.
Gregg's attitude is just yet another example how arrogant the umpires are and
how they've brought all their problems on themselves. They keep talking about
how they're going to take things into their own hands because baseball won't
do anything for them and yet, the game is about the players and not the
umpires. It's the glory seeking umpires that's made things bad between the
players and the umpires and even more so, it's Phillips' insistence on
keeping the umpires from being truly disciplined that they have a hard time
of weeding out the bad eggs.
