If you GW> ever feel like building one I can help with the design. yeah, what I've got so-far is a wire from the battery through relay contacts to the D terminal of a generic off-the-shelf regulator and and fron the F termianl to the filed terminal on the altenator, the relay is driven from the ignition switch. it works OK, and the lack of a warning light isn't as big issue as there's a voltmeter in the instrument cluster and the altenator belt drives only the altenator. the only problem is it doesn't charge hard enough under extreme conditions. (idling with wipers, fan, brake, and headlights operating) GW> If the external regulator is done properly you should be able to GW> use the field supply from the alternator (the extra half bridge).
