When I was a kid growing up on the farm, joke telling was a very common
pastime. One catagory was "Texas" jokes - you know, based on everything is
bigger in Texas.
Well, I like to tell people that Saskatchewan is a small province in Canada
that is about the size of Texas. When I was growing up, farms were small.
Most that came thought the dirty thirties were lucky if they had the "home
quarter" left, or half a section at most. Now farms need to be a lot bigger
to survive, and there are indeed, some pretty good sized ones.
Now for the truck story. It seems there was this visiting Texas rancher that
was having a conversation with a now successful farmer who had managed to put
together a rather large farm. This rancher was trying to get the farmer to
visualize just how large his ranch was. So he said "In the morning when the
sun comes up, I can get in my pickup truck and drive in one direction all
day. When the sun sets, I still won't have reached the end of my property."
To which the Saskachewan farmer said "I know what you mean. I had a truck
like
that once."
