subject: Re: When to switch to Win64 for more memory? How app compatible is it?

From: "Antti Kurenniemi"

32-bit Windows XP supports more memory than 4G, I think it's in the
"way more" category, but each process only gets to use 4Gb (2 for
itself and 2 for the kernel operations, shared by other processes). You
don't need to go to 64 bits until you have apps that need to use memory
more than 2 Gb - and that's in-memory, so any app that handles larger
amounts of data can do so, by using a database or a file or something like
that.

It will be a long time before you *need* 64-bits, but of course for example
video editing would be cool if it could be done in memory instead of on
disk.
