DB>Our current session began when my friend was out cycling with my two
DB>sons and they found a half starved stray female opaline light green
DB>flying around, so they brought her home and we fed her until she was
DB>fighting fit then we purchased a normal light green mate for her. This
DB>all happened about 4 years ago, now, they have finished breeding though
DB>they did have several successful broods, in fact one of their offsprings
DB>herself is currently rearing the latest of her own several broods.
Sounds like how I got into budgies originally. My husband's uncle found
a normal green male budgie at his outdoor bird feeding station. He
brought the bird indoors, and put him in an old cage they had in the
attic. They bought him a friend at the local department store. The two
of them lived for years together. When the uncle and his wife were
expecting their first child (they're close to our age), they gave the
birds to us.
We had the male for another 3 years before he succumbed to some sort of
respiratory illness, and the female lived to be at least 11 years old.
We acquired a couple other budgies to keep her company after he died.
She raised her first (and only) clutch at age 9, with no help at all
from the male who fathered the babies! In fact, as she was feeding the
babies, he was off courting the other hen in the flight! We didn't keep
any of the babies, though, and when the older budgies died, we gave the
last two younger ones to a friend who had other budgies.
