Yes & no.
(A) Yup it's mostly about beans & counting them but it always was.
(B) If you make an OS which has got all the tickboxes ticked & is rock
solid etc. etc.etc. then....how do you go about finding new tickboxes for
the next version & indeed selling them to potential customers as
tickboxes?
Right now it is looking more & more as if MS is basically relying on
it's momentum/user base's dislike of change/preloads etc.
The problemo with that is if Vista is as hard to move to as say moving to
OSX (on intel) or Linux then......
i.e. ms needs to keep making "new & improved!!!" where it's
becoming less & less easy to differentiate in a rapidly commoditizing
market.
Add to that the problem that in the rich parts of the world, the market is
mature & basically most sales are to young people or are replacements
& in poorer/developing parts of the world.....well the WTO etc at the
US gov's behest have made "piracy" more difficult & as a
result most developing places appear to be headed to linux.
i.e. when China, India, Brazil et al end up being the dominant market for
PC'es & they go out with linux on board then....
