Texts such as Daniel 9:26 & 27 certainly seem to imply (and quite strongly)
that Rome is being named as the source. However, those who are preparing
the way for the (fake) Moshiach are looking to a Jew, not a gentile - it
is a reasonable assumption that the Sanhedrin will look to recognise a
Jewish king as being the Messiah, as in...

to rebuild the sanctuary, combined with the great dreams linked with

    Another argument is that the rebuilding as postulated by
Maimonides requires a certain order of events: 1) coming to the land;
2) appointment of a king from the house of David; 3) blotting out the
descendants of Amalek; and only then 4) the building of the Temple.
The counter argument claims that, while this is indeed the ideal order
of events, the events themselves are not necessary mutually
interdependent and one must carry out whichever is possible at the

However, I certainly wouldn't rule out a gentile, simply based on
apparently reasonable Jewish expectations. G W Bush is the latest
in a succession of US Presidents who feels a mission to bring peace
to the Middle East etc. George W may well be the one, or he might
be yet another who was unsuccessful in bringing peace...

Bush Confident of Israeli-Palestinian Peace

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) said he was
sure he would bring peace between Israel and the Palestinians during
his second term in office, in an interview published in an Israeli
newspaper on Sunday. 

 "I want you to know that I am going to invest a lot of time and a lot
of creative thinking so that there will finally be peace between
Israel and the Palestinians," Bush told the leading Israeli newspaper
Yedioth Aharonoth.

"I am convinced that, during this term, I will manage to bring peace,"
he said in remarks published in Hebrew.
