Dad was the same, he made sure I knew how to safely handle a gun and also
behave where firearms may be in use, before I got to hold and fire any guns. 
It's like any other hazard.  Understand the hazards of gun use, and the risks
can be safely managed.

Dad was also fussy about who he's go hunting with - some people are more
sensible with guns than others, and choosing the wrong people to be with can be
the highest risk factor of all.
