  From her statement about how plentiful the "benefits and curses" of 
science are, I assume it was an experiment gone wrong, possibly, or 
maybe a lab accident.

  She states that she's 157 years old (or something like that), and she 
gives the impression that her age is the result of some change that 
happened to her, perhaps an accident, perhaps something done to her. 
I'm not quite convinced, though...  There's something more to her back 
story than "Oops, I spilled a vile of green stuff on me while I was 
cleaning somebody's lab, and suddenly I don't age anymore."

  I think perhaps she is actually one of the "monsters" that was saved 
and "graduated" and eventually took over from her predecessor.
