TWA pilot aborts takeoff from Detroit airport after engine ignites
ROMULUS, Michigan -- April 25, 1998 11:10 p.m. EDT -- A TWA
plane bound for St. Louis aborted its takeoff Saturday from Detroit
Metropolitan Airport after flames were seen shooting from an
engine.
None of the 24 passengers and five crew members were injured,
TWA spokesman Jim Brown said. The people got out of the DC-9 through
an emergency exit.
The fire was extinguished quickly by the airport fire department
about 12:45 p.m., said Mike Conway, an airport spokesman.
Brown said the plane had begun its takeoff run when pilots in
nearby planes -- and the airport's control tower -- told Flight
349's pilot that flames were shooting from the aircraft's right
engine.
The pilot aborted the takeoff and cleared the plane of its
passengers as a precaution, Brown said. The plane was towed from
the runway and will likely have the damaged engine replaced,
Brown said.
