Can't speak to Shavlik, but 3-5 times over the past year consumer WinUpdate
has had silent changes to files, a sort of "forced beta" for
those who downloaded in the first couple of hours.  Don't know how many had
the installer changed, and how many had actual changed DLLs, etc.

Can you imagine being the code librarian for WinUpdate?  They must burn one
out every six months.  A whole funny farm is probably full of former
librarians, straitjacketed, drooling in the corners, muttering,
"Q9113499, exception thrown on Media Center only, only when Office
2002 installed, on Thursdays, in the gibbous moon."
