MS> MS> College teaching comes with unique discipline problems that
MS> ES
MS> MS>teachers do not face. Have you ever had half your 9:00 A.M.
MS> class come
MS> MS>in drunk? (It's common in colleges.)
MS>
MS> I don't know where you went to school, but I have been teaching at
MS> the
MS> college level for over 30 years, and I have never seen a drunk
MS> student in
MS> class. Ever.
This was going on at both of the two small private colleges my father
taught at. (I also took courses at one while in HS and went to the other
before transferring out, and I thus personally saw it as well as hearing
about it from him.) He hadn't seen anything like it when teaching at state
universities for 20+ years either, so it seemed to be related to the kids at
the private colleges having more money to spend on booze and dope. Students
openly talked at those private colleges about how much they planned to dring
in a weekend.
MS> We flunk lots of physics students. We never get complaints from
MS> administrators.
Do you teach in a small private college, where a drop in enrollment of
100 students will bankrupt the college? If you teach at a large state
school, this isn't an issue.
MS> the
MS> college level, nobody is forced to be in school at all unless they
MS> want to
Many students are pushed into college, even though they'd be better off
going to community colleges, by parents seeking prestige.
MS> large
MS> classes of kids with very diverse abilities and achievement levels.
Just like most college profs face!
