The deeper you plant them the better of course. It also helps to find a spot 
where the pull from your filter pumps is not as strong.  There is also some 
stuff you can buy at the store to stick the plant in.  It's sort of like 
aquarium potting soil.  But depending on your fish, you may not be able to 
make them stay.  If my cichlids don't like the location of a plant, they pull 
it out.  If my ghourammis don't like the location of a plant, they eat it.  
Actually, they tend to eat it even if they like the location, but that's 
another story.
