Installation Notes for timEd/Cygwin 1.11.a2
Written by Andrew Clarke (3:633/267), 2003-02-01

timEd is copyright Gerard van Essen. Modifications released under the
GNU General Public Licence (GPL) version 2. See the file named LICENCE.

Installing

This document assumes you have an existing timEd setup, and wish to run
this 32-bit Windows version of it under Windows NT, 2000 or XP. If you
want to run this version under Windows 95, 98 or ME instead, it should
work, but will be slow, so I wouldn't recommend it.

1. Copy the file timednt.exe, to the directory where your timed.cfg
   is located.

2. Copy cygwin1.dll and cygncurses5.dll to the directory where
timednt.exe is located. If you already have a Cygwin installation,
you should probably skip this step.

3. Create a directory named \usr\share\terminfo\c on the same partition
as timednt.exe and copy the file named "cygwin" there. If you
already have a Cygwin installation, you should probably skip this step.

4. Open a Command Prompt window and type "chcp 1252" to set the active
code page. Without this, timEd's display will not look right.

5. From the same Command Prompt window, run timednt.exe.

6. Don't panic.

Bugs

All known bugs that will cause a segfault have been fixed. There are
probably a lot more segfaults waiting to be found. As of writing, the
following problems are currently in need of attention:

*.MSG support seems a bit buggy. You should probably avoid it unless
you're sure it won't corrupt your message base.

There is no support for Hudson message bases. Probably never will be.

JAM message base support is untested and probably won't work. If you
try it, it may crash timEd, or corrupt your message base, or do
something else entirely. There are no guarantees.

Squish support has been tested and should work OK.

The messagebase search (Alt+F) code has been tested and should work OK.

Nodelist browsing won't work (yet).

Only areas.bbs and squish.cfg files are supported.

The internal editor works, but not the external editor. Might fix that
in the next version.

All known Y2K bugs have been fixed. timEd is probably good until 2038,
but don't ask me to work on it then.

New Features

A variable named %mmon has been added, for use with the Hello/RepHello/
FollowHello keywords. It returns the numeric date (eg. 01 for January)
of the month that %mon would return.

Credits

Thanks to Oliver Grimm for porting timEd to UNIX and Gerrit Kuehn for
sending me Oliver's source. Thanks to Serguei Trouchelle for the Y2K
bug fixes.
