Just a quick follow-up...
 JG> Then use a commandline similar to this:
 JG> ppp.exe com1 19200 rtscts +ua "ppp.pas" modem defaultroute exit
 JG> connect "pppdial.cmd jgppp.rsp"
As it turned out, I managed to get things running by using pppfake to create 
a .Cmd file, and added text to invoke pppdial to the end of its parameter 
list. Works like a charm, without the overhead of DOIP/slattach.
