I find that most of the time, it's actually cheaper to call the company and
request a catalog than it is to send a letter. With a letter, you have to pay
for the paper, envelope, and .32 postage. Calling is usually cheaper than
.50, even during the day rates! Since you're on the west coast, you can call
a place in the midwest or on the east coast early in the morning. It costs me
about a dime to do so, if I call when it's still night rates. (I learned this
trick when I was living in the Aleutians...I'd call anywhere in the
continental US at 6 in the morning my time.)
It's different for the east-coast and midwesterners, though.
