Is it one f those little hexagon tanks from Petsmart?  We gave a two gallon 
to my son this year too.  Knowing this, there is one other problem that may 
affect you.  We've had a really tough time keeping his tank at a reasonable 
temperature.  We actually had to get a more powerful bulb to warm the tank, 
since you can't get a heater in those things.  If you a have thermometer in 
there, let me know what the temp is.  If you don't have one, you can usually 
get a cheap one at the pet store for a couple of bucks.
