George Pope ---> Malte Schmidt AM 09.07.06 BETREFF: *Re^9: Tattoo* Hi George! MS>> GP> Might I prevail upon you again, please, for a sound file? MS>> GP> This one giving both versions of uber, identifying which is correct & MS>> GP> which isn't? MS>> MS>> With "not correct" you mean the version with "u" instead of "" of the MS>> word "ber"? MS>> MS>> You can expect a file any time soon. MS>> MS>> But, you shouldn't learn much more, because the "" sounds exactly like MS>> in "Mckenstich" (it is a long vowel though) and the "u"-version.. well, MS>> you know better how you pronounce it than I do. :) GP> Weird -- in mosquito it sounds to me like "myuckenstick" while in very it GP> sounds like "ueber". . . distinctly different vowel sounds to my ear! Well, i just listened to my file again. I do a good job and speak it very clearly, I believe. :) Apart from being shorter it should be the same sound, but of course the influence of the adjacent letters become greater if the vowel is short. Maybe the influence of the "m" is making it difficult to understand what sound belongs to what. What you might hear probably is either an artefact or belongs to the "m". I could give you further examples of the "" long and short in different "environments", if you care to listen to them!
