Most of the incandescent traffic lights around here have been phased out and replaced by LED's over the last few years. They actually look noticeably brighter, though I suspect that may have more to do with aiming more of their light in a useful direction than actually emitting more light. The city's web site says these cost more initially, but recover the cost fairly quickly in reduced power consumption and less frequent lamp replacement. I suppose that the cost of replacing conventional bulbs might be pretty significant on that scale when you account for paid labor, purchase and maintenance of city vehicles, etc. Costs less. Works better.
