  I bought one of those "electronics mats" that you "usually" place under a 
VCR "or similar electronic equipment" cut it in half, and I had two nice BIG 
Rat-pads...costs about the same, but when you chop it in half, then you've 
got TWO mouse pads...and there's more than enough surface area on both to 
last quite a while...they're big enough so that when one is partly worn out, 
you can just rotate it and use the other side of it...and when that's worn, 
replace it with the other half that you tossed into a drawer/the closet... =)
