It's a wash, constant temperature changes for disk drives cause just as
many failures as bearing wear.

I make the techs turn their computers off at night because it's safer (you
can't hack a machine that's not on) and they don't experience any more or
less failures than the other users who leave their machines on all the
time.

On servers where I have 3 or more hard drives I find leaving them on tends
to have less failures, I suspect it's because they run a lot hotter than
workstations.

Most of my hardware failures have been fans, capacitors, and hard drives in
that order. Dust definitely makes a difference but a machine on a shelf
instead of the floor can compensate for that easily (floor level tends to
get way more dust).
