As expected, a nail-biting pitching duel!
The Braves really dodged a bullet in the first 2-3 innings, because Maddux
was way off, even though the two mediots completely missed it. Virtually
every single pitch in the first two innings was way up in or out of the
strike zone, and that's not the way Maddux makes a living. By the 3rd or 4th
inning he began to get comfortable and was pretty much vintage Maddux, though
still a little more wild than normal (for him).
What can you say about Kile? After the HR to Klesko he pitched no-hit
baseball. He was fantastic and deserved a better fate. But hey, that's why
the Braves have had so much success over the years. They tend to win games
like that, where their pitching bails out their offense.
I have a feeling the whole series is going to go like this, where three or
four runs will seem like a virtual offensive explosion. Game 2 is just as
important for the Bravos, because the last three are in H-town.
