JANE KELLEY was thinking about Alcoholics and keyed into cyberspace:
JK>MP>JK>According to the paper I laboriously typed in for you, Dr.
JK>MP>JK>Charles Bates, in Olympia WA would say this is due to food
JK>MP>JK>allergies. Any history of that in the kid's family tree?
JK>MP>But ADHD has been shown not to be caused by food allergies. In
JK>MP>fact, the diagnostic method promulgated by ADHD experts, and
JK>MP>sanctioned by DSM III specifically require that any other possible
JK>MP>cause of the behavior be ruled out. IOW, a kid with ADHD has
JK>MP>already been shown not to have allergies. ADHD is what is
JK>MP>"leftover" when everything else is ruled out.
JK>1. ADHD "experts" don't agree with each other on many points.
Real ADHD experts agree in most of the major points. The knowledge and
understanding of the disorder is being expanded and it may appear that
there is confusion. But there isn't. Also, there are many quacks, like
Breggin, who purports to be an expert, but aren't.
And, of course, the salescreeps do not agree. It would hurt their sales.
JK>2. The DSM III has been replaced with the DSM IV which is faulty in
JK>several points.
A point that I made, vis-a-vis one change in the criteria for ADHD.
There are others. I prefer the DSM III for ADHD.
JK>3. Any history of allergy in the kid's family tree?
Nope, my kid is not allowed in trees.
Jane, allergies have to be fully ruled out, under DSM III, for a
diagnosis of ADHD. The kid has to show no reaction that would explain
the behavior.
