You run anything on your servers? A lot of (but not all of) the server apps
handle system shutdowns correctly. It's one reason why you have the UPS
units that are connected to the server(s) with USB (or serial port or
whatever) - the idea is that they send a request to the system to shut down
in time before the battery runs out, and the system then sends the shutdown
message to all processes running. It's up to the software writers to
actually handle the graceful shutdown.

It's not very common to handle it properly in non-server apps, but it's not
too difficult either, so it could be done for an app that processes data
for long periods of time.
