I was in Egypt for a while recently, arriving there just at the end of 
Ramadan. I noticed that many of the men had bruises on their foreheads. 
These, I was told, were caused by repeated blows of the head against the 
floor, while praying. 
  
Many of the bruises looked bad enough that, if they had beem caused by 
a single blow, the man would have suffered a significant concussion. I 
don't know if repeated smaller blows would cause any neurological 
damage. I suspect they would. 
  
I've always said that religion is harmful...
