Hi, Greg. Quoting your message to Dennis Wierzbicki:
GC> Avery had 17 starts, and needs 18 for an option for 1998. So,
GC> after his 17th start, they sent him to the bullpen.
You neglected to mention that, in his last four starts, he was
0-4, with a 18.47 ERA. An article I read quoted Avery as having
said, "The way I have been pitching, I probably deserved a worse
demotion."
GC> The Players' Union is investigating.
How ludicrous, but how typical. The Players' Association again
exhibits its _true_ purpose: to protect the incomptetent. Bad
enough that teams have to keep guys who can only hit a baseball,
but can't _play_ baseball. And when was a clause added to the
Basic Agreement that empowers players to preempt the manager's
authority to determine a team's lineup or rotation?
