Sheila King On (18 Jun 96) was overheard to say to Bob Moylan
-> We are currently pushing for paid release time and paid training for
SK> This is a very good plan IMHO. Without the teachers being trained how
SK> to incorporate the computers, they will likely just sit in the
SK> classroom unused.
As far too many do. It's a case of here's your computer - goodby.
SK> Do the teachers see them as a necessary part of classroom
SK> instruction? If they do not, they won't be too motivated to use them.
Some do and those are the teachers who have been using up all the
ribbons, paper and wearing out mouse balls. HURAH!
Others don't see them as anything but an added and unwelcome burden.
I've seen a few times that when approached one on one some can be
brought to a point where there is less (unfounded) fear. One _very_
experienced teacher had been brought to believe that her job depended
on learning how to use the thing - didn't do a thing to reduce her
phobia - just the opposite. When she was shown a couple of times
what her students could do she was thrilled and leaped in with both
feet....old dogs and new tricks syndrome...
SK> I'm just trying to convince my department at this time that it is a
SK> good resource tool. We aren't actively trying to convince teachers yet
SK> that they would be a good instructional tool for classroom use.
I'm very fond of Excel - try using that to show how positively simple
it is to graph data on anything, display comparative data on the
same graph, show relational values and on and on.. a very handy
RESOURCE tool indeed (and if a kid or 2 or 3 should learn something
along the way - - weeeellllll that's just the chance ya gotta take
sometimes...)
I'm pretty sure I've rambled and probably took up 100+ lines to say
very little to answer your question. That happens a lot when someone
tries to pin me down.. (:
Best...Bob
BTW is it Summer yet?
... Mindless ramblings brought to you courtesy of much caffeine.
