There's been no mention of this in FidoNet - perhaps American's are
not as concerned about losing their rights as is this Canadian writer.
Let's see what light a RS employee in this echo can shed on the issue.

The FCC asked RS and Uniden not to let end users have schematics! What
gives the FCC the authority to do that? I am not all that familiar with
USA Laws, but IMHO a Service Manual is a book, and the FCC doesn't have
any control over printed matter. If I lived in the USA, and needed a
Service Manual and I got a BULLS**T reply like that I would write my
Congressman and maybe the FTC saying that;
a/. It's a violation of the 1st Ammendment (I understand that's a BIG one
in the USofA)
b/. Bitch to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) under anti-trust legislation
that this is creating a monopoly for RS effectively preventing
ndependent
repair shops from servicing RS and Uniden equipment.
I can't see what is to be gained by "withholding" of this information. Are
they afraid you may compare the North American and European version of the
scanner and find out the part number of the CPU and restore cell coverage???
With the surface mounted components that are in use, very few people have
the skill to swap out parts. It's not like a motherboard with a ZIF socket
that lets you pop out the 80486DX2-66 and drop in a new CPU...
Sounds like RS is just feeding a line of crap to retain servicing. Ask
them to send you Proof, like a copy of the FCC order!
