JW> And without passing through a federally inspected abattoir, wild
JW> meat cannot be legally exported outside the NWT, even within
JW> Canada, thereby stifling what could be a profitable little industry
JW> for Natives wanting to maintain a more traditional lifestyle.

SH> The solution to that is to build an abbatoir.

That's not easy to do. The Feds say there isn't enough volume to warrant
one.

JW> It's readily available here albeit on a vary informal chain of
JW> supply and subject to the points made above.

SH> I remember getting caribou in Dettah one year and we pick up moose
SH> meat or sheep from neighbours but there is no commercial traffic.

I get all the fish, geese and caribou I can eat from my step son and a
brother in law both of whom hunt a lot. My son in law's folks (they're
from the Mackenzie delta) supply whale and sealmeat; I buy char cheaply
from a bush pilot who makes regular runs to Bathurst Inlet.

SH> in the case of the NWT, I did find the price of single malt
SH> scotches comparable to ours so I picked up a bottle of Laphroaig.

Our taxes are based on the alcohol content not as a markup on the base
price. So the taxes are the same on a cheap brand as a premium brand.

Cheers,

Jim
