Individual stores may do whatever they want with the warranty period on used
or demo equipment. It's a gamble on their part - a minor chance that the
product will come back against the cost of the item if it were to remain in
inventory. I think it's a good idea.
I have purchased a number of demo items from Radio Shack - but I don't think
any of them were scanners. The only problem I ever had was that about 10
years after I bought it, the solder cracked on the RF finals of a CB...
easily repaired - even though their repair service couldn't find it! I
reflowed the solder and everything is hunky-dory. I had sort of the same
problem with a RS scanner - I was able to fix it in my hotel room... This
scanner was purchased new in the box, so I wouldn't bleame the problem that
the CB had on anything but age and vibration.
Like you, I never got anything but the standard warranty on demo/used stuff.
I do usually get a substantial price cut though!
